Why early intervention?

Long lasting functional changes in the brain occur when we learn new things or memorize new information. These changes in neural connections are what we call neuroplasticity. Child's brain develops during the first 5 years of life, and it sets the stage for the child’s intelligence, emotional stability and personality. Parental
involvement with a child in initial years is directly related to the child’s communication and academic achievement. Baby’s brain begins development in the early embryo when cell division flourishes into millions of neurons in the brain. There would be 100 billion neurons at the time of birth, which will die if the brain is not stimulated from birth. Brain of a 6-month old infant is 25% of the size compared to an adult’s brain. By 3 years of age, the size of the brain of an infant and adult would be the same. Factors such as nurture, love, stimulation, and proper nutrition at an early age have a direct impact on the psychological, physiological, and cognitive development of a child. Hence, itis important to start early intervention for developmental delays and disorders to have a better prognosis.

Be aware, be prepared...

Red Flags on child development milestones (0-4 months):

  • Trouble in moving eyes.
  • Does not notice own hands.
  • Problem with supporting the head.
  • Does not bring objects to mouth.
  • No babbling or cooing.
  • Not responding to people smile – no social smile.

If your child has concern in any of these areas immediately consult a paediatrician.

Tips on how to deal with the delays:

  • Observe the delays. Act Early
  • Observe your child’s activities and note it down.
  • Get regular general check-ups from a paediatrician.
  • Seek early intervention services that helps the child to cope up early.
